This week I have chosen Henry C. RAASS, my 3rd great-granduncle.

1) Henry C. Raass was born in 1848 in Austria to Joseph RAASS & Anna CONRAD.

2) He appeared as “Henry Raas” on the census on 1860 June 23 in Detroit, Michigan. He is 12 years old and goes to school

3) He appeared as “Henry Raass” on the census on 1870 July 1 in Detroit, Michigan. He is a 22 years old shoemaker.

4) During the years 1872-1875 he resided in Detroit, Michigan working as a shoemaker/bootmaker and living on Fort Street.

5) He married Eliza DEGENFELDER on 1875 January 7 in Detroit, Michigan, USA. “Harry” is a 26 year old laborer from Austria, and Eliza is 20 years old from Germany. They were married by Pastor Appollenius Hotter, and witnesses were Wm. Bourmann and Mary Trousad. (I do not know who either witness is)

6) During the years 1878-1880 he & his family resided in Detroit, Michigan who worked as a shoemaker/bootmaker and
living with his family at 188 Division Street.

7) His spouse, Eliza Degenfelder, died in March 6, 1880 in Detroit, Michigan when she was 25 years old.

8) He appeared as “Henry Raass” on the census on 1880 June 23 in Detroit, Michigan. He is a 32 year old shoemaker who is now a widow. His wife Elisabeth died 3 months ago, and it is unclear where their 4 children are living. He is able to read and write, and he lives at 188 Division.

9) He married Anna (Growber) Raass (his father’s widow) on June 7, 1886 in Lucas county, Ohio.

10) He worked as a Shoemaker in 1890 in Detroit, Michigan and lives on 342 Alfred.

11) He attended Sacred Heart, Detroit, Michigan.

12) He died of a stomach hemorrhage on 1894 February 27 in Detroit, Michigan when he was 45 years old.

13) He was buried at the Mt. Elliott Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan, on March 2, 1894. All the family buried in Section A, Lot 42
